Mary Nora McGovern, nee Cregan, 83, died peacefully on December 29th 2018 after a short illness. She was surrounded by her children and grandchildren. Mary was preceded in death by her son Carl in 1984 and her husband Peter in 2010.
Mary was born in Newcastle West, Limerick, Ireland to Carl and Maureen Cregan. She was one of eight children. As a young woman, she earned her nursing credentials at the Richmond Hospital in Dublin and met Dr. Peter McGovern.
They married in 1960 and had four children. Mary emigrated from Ireland with her family to Alberta, Canada in 1974 and then two years later to America. She is survived by her children Deirdre, James and Maureen who were by her side. Mary was a wonderful mother and a kind, thoughtful and lovable person who touched everyone around her. Her immediate family, siblings and relatives abroad, patients she treated as a nurse and friends she made along the way will forever remember her as loving, caring, decisive, elegant and humorous. Mary was beloved by all who knew her, family and friends were drawn in by her Irish charm and wit. She was a fierce Irish Mammie and will be missed terribly.
We are comforted that she is in Heaven with her husband and son and no longer in pain.
Those we love don't go away
They walk beside us every day
Unseen, unheard, but always near
Still loved, still missed and very dear (Irish Blessing)
Mary will be laid to rest in Mount Calvary Cemetery January 12, 2018 following a committal ceremony that will begin at 11:00am. The family welcome all who knew Mary to attend her committal ceremony and to attend a traditional Irish Wake afterwards at Kells Irish Restaurant on SW 2nd Avenue, Portland OR.
