Margaret 'Meg' Helgert

April 25, 1945 — June 4, 2023

Meg Helgert, age 78, of Portland, Oregon, died peacefully in her home June 4, 2023. Mary Margaret, her “official name”, was born November 24, 1945 in Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin. She and her twin brother, Mike, were adopted when they were 2 years old by John and Margaret Helgert of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where they grew up. Meg began her health care career after high school graduation as a nurse aide, then a licensed practical nurse. She moved to Dallas in the late 1960s, working as an LVN and completing the Associate Degree Registered Nurse program at El Centro College in Dallas in 1972. At Baylor Hospital, Meg loved working the 3-11 shift in the Emergency Room. When she had the opportunity to further her education Meg moved to Portland, Oregon and successfully completed the Family Nurse Practitioner program at Good Samaritan. She graduated from Portland State University with a BS in Social Sciences.  Meg particularly enjoyed helping unserved and underserved people get health care. Her practice extended through the Portland and Vancouver areas plus a brief time in Richmond, Virginia.

Meg relished life, made lifelong friends, and enjoyed exploring new ideas and philosophies. She enjoyed reading mystery books, talking about politics, and drinking coffee. The Green Bay Packers were her football team even when living in Dallas Cowboy country.

Meg was predeceased by her parents and her twin brother. At the end of her life, she relied on good friends for help and was overcome by their care and generosity. Meg will be missed.
